Line of Sight Coaching is a partnership between Dr. Joel Small and Dr. Edwin McDonald, two dental practitioners who work with healthcare professionals to help them build more successful practices so they can live the balanced life they seek.

Meet your Coaches
Dr. Joel Small





Dr. Joel C. Small is a retired clinical endodontist, Board Certified Executive Leadership Coach, entrepreneur, speaker, and the author of “Face to Face: A Leadership Guide For Healthcare Professionals and Entrepreneurs.”
In his coaching practice, Dr. Small works with a limited number of motivated healthcare professionals. His clients are looking to experience personal and professional growth while taking their business practices to a higher level. Together they work to reduce their stress and time at work while seeing more profits.
He received his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and completed his residency in endodontics at the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, Texas. He received his MBA, with an emphasis in healthcare management, from Texas Tech University. He is a graduate of the University of Texas in Dallas, Jindal School of Management, post-graduate program in executive coaching. In 2021, Dr. Small received his Team Coaching Foundations Certification from the Global Team Coaching Institute.
Dr. Small is a co-founder of Phase II Associates a dental consultancy and brokerage firm located in Dallas, Texas. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to his profession. He has served the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) as a member of numerous committees, including his service as a trustee of the Research and Education Foundation. He has also served the AAE as one of their national spokespersons. He is a past president of the Southwest Society of Endodontists. He is a nationally recognized speaker on the subjects of leadership and professional development.
Dr. Small is now retired from clinical dentistry and lives in the foothills of Golden, Colorado, where he and his wife, Brenda, enjoy hiking, traveling, and fly fishing in majestic mountain streams. He continues to maintain an active coaching practice and speaks often at dental meetings throughout the country.
Dr. Edwin McDonald


Dr. Edwin A. McDonald III is a Speaker, Author, Dentist and Certified Executive Coach. He maintains a private dental practice in Plano, Texas, specializing in esthetic, restorative, and Implant dentistry.
Dr. Mac, as he is known to his coaching clients and patients, has developed a speaking career that has seen him deliver presentations for Dentists and Assistants at the Southwest Dental Conference, the Texas Meeting, the American Association of Endodontists, the Chicago Mid Winter Dental Clinic, the Yankee Dental Congress, the Greater New York Dental Meeting, and the CDA Anaheim & San Francisco. He has authored articles for Dental Economics and Inside Dentistry and is chairman of the 2019 Annual Session of the Texas Dental Association.
Dr. Mac is the author of "Unchanging Points of Light", a book that offers readers the opportunity to take a new and perhaps unique look at the foundational concepts of truth, life, love, identity, sexuality, money, power, brokenness, belief, and light.
Dr. McDonald is a graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston; a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, and the International College of Dentists.; a visiting faculty member at the Pankey Institute and Spear Education.
His interests include volunteering with Serving Him International Healthcare Ministry on dental and medical mission trips to Braila, Romania.
Pina Johnson


Pina Johnson, a certified professional coach and practice administrator, has over 20 years of experience in the dental field.
She managed a multi-office specialty practice with over 40 staff members and 11 doctors in the Bay Area, California. Her coaching strategy and emphasis lie in developing leadership skills and practice cultures that produce peak-performing teams along with increased productivity and profitability.
In her private practice, Pina specializes in group coaching. She coaches many dental teams with great success, resulting in increased employee engagement, reduced stress, improved performance, and enhanced communication.
Pina received her professional coaching certification from the University of California, Davis. Upon completing her training, she was invited back to serve in multiple capacities as a UC Davis coaching program faculty member. Currently, she holds the designation of Professional Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation.
Pina has been a featured speaker covering topics including, The Neuroscience of Trust, Management Behaviors that Foster Employee Engagement, and How to Talk So Your Staff Will Listen, and Listen So Your Staff Will Talk.
Pina is a Member of the American Association of Dental Office Managers, Dental Speaking Consulting Network, Dental Entrepreneur Women, International Coach Federation, and the ICF Sacramento Chapter.
