Coaching with Dr. Joel Small has been very beneficial to me, both personally and professionally. Dr. Small has great clarity and insight into the practice of dentistry and into what makes dentists click. He has helped me focus my energies into what is truly important and let go of negative thoughts and actions that limit growth. Dr. Small is consistently positive and has transferred to me a "can do" attitude. He has become a trusted advisor and valued friend. "

To future coaching clients of Drs. Joel Small and Mac McDonald,
It is my distinct honor to recommend, without reservation, these two fine gentlemen. I have had the pleasure of knowing them both for over 25 years, as they have developed their coaching expertise through the past decade, their gifts will soon become yours. Your self-discernment will rise as they pull offerings from the deepest levels of your being, and you will find clarity regardless of the issues(s) you confront.
I mentioned that their coaching expertise has developed through the past decade, but in truth, they began their individual journeys decades ago. Both are life-long learners. Both are life-long givers. And both are life-long friends.
Dr. Joel Small – Joel was my endodontist-of-choice for over twenty five years. Once he began his MBA training at Texas Tech University, his business awareness took a higher trajectory. His authorship of Face to Face was a gift to all of us, and of particular impact were his chapters on abundance vs scarcity. For me, it crystalized the Purpose-Driven Life. Joel then became my personal coach for approximately 3 years as I was ramping up and serving as President of the Texas Dental Association. His trust and input, whether the issue was professionally visionary or managing contentious personalities, was invaluable. He never answered “the question” for me, but guided me to personal epiphanies. I will never be able to thank him enough.
Dr. Mac McDonald – Mac is one of the deepest thinkers I have ever met. He is a master at learning more about you, and his natural coaching talents are now available to people like you and me. Mac lectures widely on numerous dental subjects, has been teaching for decades at the esteemed L.D. Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida, and has led Dallas-area as well as statewide meetings, some of which attract nearly 10,000 attendees. Mac has also authored a book, Unchanging Points of Light, and if you are looking for some though provocation, read his chapters on ‘diversity’.
Anything these two leaders do together will exude that ‘specialness’ that we all seek. I highly recommend both of them, and challenge you to challenge yourself by placing yourself in their company.
Sincerely,
William H. Gerlach, DDS
Past President, Texas Dental Association
We found Dr. Small’s message of personalized leadership in the small health care setting refreshing and unique. He teaches that leadership cannot be delegated and that the doctor creates the culture in the practice. Creating a well-defined practice culture will allow the doctor to focus on dentistry rather than managing people. He has a passion for dentistry as well as a passion for people and leadership – which is very obvious in his presentation. I think Dr. Small’s presentation is one of the best and most applicable discussions on leadership in dentistry that I have ever heard. Thanks Dr. Small."

Dr. Joel Small has been a long-time friend, business partner and confidante. His book, Face to Face, introduced the concept of ‘Culture of Abundance’, a philosophy which became life changing. As a lifelong learner, his personal growth as a Professional Coach is the ideal culmination to an individual who asks laser-sharp questions, listens attentively to answers, and then effortlessly moves the client to insights and decisions. Not only do I enjoy our talks and time together, his suggested reading has led to further growth in arenas which I’ve had opportunity to share with others. As a fellow servant leader, Dr. Joel Small has been a gift to my growth in leadership, and I heartily recommend his coaching services to others."

I had the distinct pleasure to work with Joel Small over the course of a time that was pivotal in my practice and personal life. We were growing, I had just turned 50 and we were considering a new partner. I was struggling with burnout.
What Joel did for me was he was able to bring me back into focus to help me prioritize my struggles and begin to come up with a plan to deal with them efficiently and effectively. I might have been able to address them myself, but it would have taken years to do so. Joel helped me do that in only a few short months of working with him, saving me valuable time, all while addressing personal and professional burnout.
Long and short, Joel Small is the go to coach for busy professionals. His flexibility and skill set is unmatched and I highly recommend him."
